Dedicated to the musical expression of the concept of chiaroscuro, the play of light and shadows, of the clear and the obscured, Lux et Umbrae was founded in 2014 by Robert, Michael and Sigrun.
Playing and singing together, frequently with guest musicians, our concert repertoire ranges from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries and embraces court, church, chamber and theater. Though the music we choose often comes from standard, known historical works, we try in every concert to bring music back to sounding life that has not been heard since the time of its composition.
An additional aim, and one perhaps more central to our vision, is to bring contrasting combinations of sounds, voices, and musical methods and concepts to a repertoire not normally associated with them. We believe these to have solid historical, musicological foundations, as well as an inherent quality that does not disturbing the artistic integrity of the original work.
